Welcome to "Last Week Now," the newsletter summarizing the education covered last week. Last week we reviewed Procalcitonin for bacterial infections, ultrasound in cardiac arrest, an approach to PEA arrest, and dual-sequence defibrillation!

So we hope you're ready....to review some great resus content....it's time for Last Week, NOW!

This IG clip takes a look at procalcitonin in bacterial infections and how reliable it is. I would say the literature is not there to rely exclusively on this lab test and this is based on multiple trials and meta-analyses. If you're using procalcitonin for your patients then you defintely want to check out the clip here.

Have you heard of dual sequence defibrillation for refractory v-fib? Is it myth, does it work, does it void your defibrillator's warranty? Dr. Sheldon Cheskes gives a talk at the University of Maryland's Emergency Cardiology Symposium. Dr. Cheskes is the lead author of a game changing article from the NEJM linked here

If you manage patients in cardiac arrest, this is a must-listen straight from the author himself. Here's the link.

Ultrasound is such a big part of my practice and I cannot think of managing any patients in 2023 without it. One of the most important reasons to use it is in cardiac arrest to look for reversible causes, prognosis, and to assist with rapid invasive procedures. I gave this talk at the Emergency Cardiology Symposium this week and I go through the pros and cons of using ultrasound in cardiac arrest. Check out the video now!

A Resus Rhyme

"When life's light begins to fade,

We jump into action, not afraid.

Compressions, breaths, we give it our all,

To bring back a pulse, to hear a heart's call.

We work as a team, with one goal in sight,

To make sure that patient sees another night.

It's not always easy, but we never give in,

We'll bring them back, or we'll die trying, amen.

So if you see us in action, don't be alarmed,

We're just doing our job, we won't be harmed.

And if we bring your loved one back to life,

Please don't forget to thank us,

...we like high-fives."

Thank you for taking exceptional care of your patients.
